Microsoft Office for Mac Licences Explained: Which Versions Work on macOS and How to Activate

Office for Mac is the product that generates the most pre-sales questions and the most activation emails at GetDigiMarket, almost always for the same reason: a customer buys a Windows licence, usually Professional Plus because it is the best value, and discovers that it will not activate on macOS. This guide sets out which Office licences exist for the Mac, how Mac activation works (it is different from Windows), what each edition includes, and which one to buy for a given situation.

The rule that explains most problems: Office editions are platform-specific

Microsoft produces Office for Windows and Office for Mac as separate products with separate licences. A key for Office 2024 Professional Plus is a Windows key; the Professional Plus edition does not exist for macOS at all. The same applies to Office Standard, Office Professional and Office Home & Student for PC. If the product name on a listing says “for Windows” or “PC”, it will not activate on a Mac, however the key is entered.

The Mac editions carry “for Mac” in the name. On GetDigiMarket they are listed in the Office for Mac category, and the product page states the platform at the top. If you are not sure which platform a listing is for, the delivery method is the giveaway: Windows editions are delivered as a key you type into the app; Mac editions are delivered as a key you redeem on Microsoft’s website.

How Mac activation works

Office for Mac does not have a “Change product key” dialog. Activation follows four steps:

1. Go to office.com/setup (or the redemption page named in your delivery email) and sign in with a Microsoft account. Use the account you want the licence attached to permanently; it cannot be moved to another account afterwards.
2. Enter the 25-character key. The licence is added to the account and the page offers the installer download.
3. Download and run the installer (the .pkg file), which installs the full suite.
4. Open Word, choose Sign in, and sign in with the same Microsoft account. Office checks the account, finds the licence and activates. The first app you activate licenses all the apps on that Mac.

The key is used once, at redemption. After that, the Microsoft account is the licence. Reinstalling macOS, replacing the Mac or resetting it only requires signing in again, which is more convenient than Windows activation but also means you must keep access to that Microsoft account.

Common Mac activation problems and fixes

“This product key has already been redeemed.” The key was redeemed to a different Microsoft account, often a family member’s or an old work account. Sign in to that account instead, or check account.microsoft.com/services under each account you own.

Office keeps asking to sign in or shows “Unlicensed Product”. The signed-in account is not the one holding the licence, or the Mac has stale licence files from a previous installation. Sign out of all Office apps, run Microsoft’s Office Licence Removal Tool for Mac, restart, open Word and sign in with the correct account.

Only a trial is offered after sign-in. The licence is on the account but the installed build is a Microsoft 365 trial build that cannot read a perpetual licence. Remove Office completely, download the installer from the account’s Services page (not from the trial link), and reinstall.

macOS version is too old. Office 2024 for Mac requires macOS Sonoma 14 or later at the time of writing, and Microsoft supports the three most recent macOS versions. On an older Mac that cannot update, Office 2021 for Mac (macOS 12 or later) is the practical option.

Outlook will not add an account. Outlook for Mac supports Microsoft 365, Outlook.com, Gmail, iCloud and IMAP accounts. Exchange on-premises older than 2016 is not supported in the current build.

One-time purchase or Microsoft 365 on a Mac?

Microsoft 365 Personal costs $99.99 per year for one person and Family $129.99 per year for up to six people, and includes 1 TB of OneDrive and continuous feature updates. A one-time Office 2024 Home & Business for Mac licence is a single payment and runs for as long as the Mac does, with security updates until 9 October 2029. What about Office on an iPad or iPhone?

Office apps on iPadOS and iOS are free to install and free to use for viewing. Editing on screens larger than 10.1 inches, and the premium features on any size, require Microsoft 365. A perpetual Mac licence does not unlock editing on an iPad. If mobile editing matters, factor it into the subscription decision.

• One Mac, Word and Excel most days, email in Apple Mail: Office 2024 Home for PC or Mac. Cheapest perpetual option with the core apps.
• One Mac, you use Outlook for email and calendar: Office 2024 Home & Business for Mac. It is the only perpetual Mac edition that includes Outlook.
• One Mac, you only need Word: Word 2024 for Mac standalone.
• Mac plus a Windows PC in the same house: either two perpetual licences (a Mac edition and a Windows Office licence) or one Microsoft 365 Family subscription covering both.
• Business deploying ten or more Macs: Office LTSC for Mac through volume licensing, which installs without Microsoft accounts.

Apple Silicon, Intel Macs and performance

Office 2024 for Mac and Office 2021 for Mac are universal builds that run natively on Apple Silicon (M1 through the current M-series chips) and on Intel Macs. There is no separate licence or download for either architecture; the installer detects the chip and installs the right binaries. On Apple Silicon, Excel handles large workbooks noticeably faster than the last Intel generation, and PowerPoint’s rendering of embedded video no longer stutters. If you are moving from an older Intel Mac to a new one, your licence moves with your Microsoft account as described above; there is nothing to buy again.

How to check which Office you have on a Mac

Open Word, click Word in the menu bar, then About Word. The dialog shows the version number and, under it, the licence: “Microsoft 365 Subscription”, “Office Home & Business 2024” or similar.
