Every Windows licence we sell is delivered by email within seconds of payment, together with a direct link to Microsoft’s own installer. This guide covers the whole process from that email to a machine reporting “Windows is activated”.
Before you start
Two things are worth checking first. Confirm which edition your key is for — Home, Pro, Enterprise or a specific LTSC build — because a key only activates the edition it was issued for. This is the single most common cause of activation failure. Second, if you are installing Windows 11, confirm the machine meets the hardware requirements: TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and a supported 64-bit processor. Press Windows + R, type tpm.msc and press Enter to check. Many machines have TPM available but disabled in the BIOS, so a “not found” result is often a setting rather than missing hardware.
Step 1 — Download the installation media
Use the official Microsoft link in your delivery email. It takes you to Microsoft’s own download page, where you can either upgrade the current machine in place or create installation media on a USB drive. If you are building a bootable USB, you will need a drive of at least 8 GB, and everything on it will be erased. Our separate guide on creating a bootable USB for Windows walks through that in detail.
Step 2 — Choose the right edition during setup
Windows setup will ask which edition to install. Choose the edition your key is for. If you install Home and then try a Pro key, activation fails — not because the key is bad, but because the editions do not match. If setup skips the question and installs automatically, you can change edition afterwards from Settings without reinstalling.
Step 3 — Enter your product key
You can enter the key during installation when prompted, or afterwards. To do it afterwards, open Settings → System → Activation, select Change product key, and type the 25-character key exactly as it appears in your email. Copy and paste it rather than typing by hand where possible — a mistyped character is a surprisingly common cause of a rejected key.
Step 4 — Confirm activation
Return to Settings → System → Activation. You should see Windows is activated with a digital licence or activated using a product key. If the machine is offline, activation completes as soon as it next connects, or you can activate by phone — see below.
If activation does not succeed
Do not assume the key is faulty. In our experience, most failures fall into three groups:
- Edition mismatch — a Pro key on a Home installation, or vice versa. Change the installed edition rather than replacing the key.
- Previous activation still present — an older licence or a leftover installation can block the new key. Removing it resolves it.
- Online activation refused — often a routine fraud check rather than a problem with the key, particularly if the machine has changed region. This is resolved through Microsoft’s automated telephone activation, which takes a few minutes.
Our free Confirmation ID service handles the telephone route for you if you would rather not deal with the automated system yourself.
Getting help quickly
If you do contact us, include your order number and the exact error code shown on screen — codes such as 0xC004C003 or 0x803FA067 identify the cause immediately, which usually means we solve it in one reply instead of several. Every order is covered by our 180-day money-back guarantee, so if a key genuinely cannot be activated you get a replacement or a refund.
