How to Download, Install and Activate Windows 10 and Windows 11 with a Product Key

A Windows licence from GetDigiMarket arrives by email within seconds of payment with the product key and a link to Microsoft’s official download page. Everything after that is a sequence of ordinary steps, and this guide walks through all of them for Windows 11 and Windows 10: checking the PC, making the installation media, choosing between a clean installation and an in-place upgrade, picking the right edition, entering the key, and dealing with activation errors. It applies to every licence in our Windows category, including Windows 11 Pro, Windows 11 Home and Windows 10 Pro.

Step 1: check the PC meets the requirements

Windows 11 requires a 64-bit processor on Microsoft’s supported list (roughly Intel 8th generation, AMD Ryzen 2000 and newer), 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. Windows 10 runs on almost anything made in the last fifteen years with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. To check for TPM on an existing Windows installation, press Windows + R, type tpm.msc and look for “TPM is ready for use” with specification version 2.0. A “compatible TPM cannot be found” message often means the TPM is disabled in the firmware (look for PTT on Intel boards or fTPM on AMD boards) rather than absent.

If the PC fails the Windows 11 check, Windows 10 remains an option for compatibility, with the caveat that Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025 and consumer Extended Security Updates ended on 13 October 2026. For a machine that will stay on Windows 10, the Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 edition is supported until January 2032 and is the sensible choice.

Step 2: get the installation media

Click the Microsoft link in your delivery email. The page offers two routes.

Media Creation Tool. Download and run it on any Windows PC, choose “Create installation media”, select the language and 64-bit, and point it at an 8 GB or larger USB drive. It downloads Windows and writes the drive in one step. The media contains all consumer editions; the edition is chosen during setup.

ISO file. Download the ISO and write it to USB with Rufus (choose GPT and UEFI for modern PCs). Rufus also offers options to remove the TPM and Secure Boot checks, which allow installation on unsupported hardware; Microsoft does not support that configuration, and such machines may not receive every update. Download only from Microsoft. Modified ISOs and “lite” builds often refuse retail keys or report 0xC004F074 because they were prepared for volume activation.

Step 3: clean install or in-place upgrade?

In-place upgrade keeps files, apps and settings. Mount the ISO (double-click it) or insert the USB while Windows is running and run setup.exe from it. Choose “Keep personal files and apps”. This is the right route when moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11 on a working PC, or when the current edition matches your key and you simply want the newer version.

Clean installation erases the drive and starts fresh. Boot from the USB (press F12, F2, Esc or Del at power-on, depending on the manufacturer, to pick the boot device). This is the right route for a new SSD, a PC with problems, or when you need a different edition from the one installed. Back up first.

Step 4: choose the edition that matches your key

During a clean installation, setup asks for a product key. You can enter it now, or click “I don’t have a product key” and pick the edition manually. Either way, the installed edition must match the key:

If the firmware contains an OEM key (most branded laptops), setup silently installs that edition, usually Home, without asking. If you bought a Pro key, that is fine: after setup, Change product key with your Pro key upgrades Home to Pro in place and activates. If you bought a Home key and setup installed Pro, you must reinstall choosing Home, because Windows cannot downgrade.

Step 5: finish setup and enter the key

Complete the out-of-box experience: region, keyboard, network, account. Windows 11 Home requires a Microsoft account and internet during setup; Pro allows a local account through “sign-in options” on domain-join. Once on the desktop, open Settings, System, Activation. If the key was entered during setup and the PC is online, the page already says “Windows is activated”. If not, click Change product key, paste the 25-character key from your email, and click Next. Activation completes in seconds.

Then run Windows Update until nothing further is offered, and install the manufacturer’s drivers if any devices show warnings in Device Manager.

Step 6: link the licence to your Microsoft account

In Settings, Accounts, Your info, sign in with a Microsoft account. The activation page then reads “Windows is activated with a digital licence linked to your Microsoft account”. This makes future reinstalls and hardware changes easier because the Activation troubleshooter can re-apply the licence from the account. It is optional but recommended.

Activation errors and fixes

0xC004F050: the product key is invalid. Edition mismatch or typo. Check Settings, System, About against your order and paste the key rather than typing it.

0xC004C008 or 0xC004C003: key used or blocked. Online activation refused the request, usually because the key is still counted against a previous installation or a fraud check triggered. 0xC004F074: no key management service could be contacted. The installation is set for volume activation. Enter your retail key with slmgr /ipk YOUR-KEY then slmgr /ato from an elevated Command Prompt.

0x803FA067 or “Windows can’t activate right now” after a hardware change. Run the Activation troubleshooter on the activation page and choose “I changed hardware on this device recently”, signing in with the Microsoft account the licence is linked to.

Reinstalling or moving to a new PC

After a clean reinstall on the same hardware, Windows usually activates automatically from the digital licence without the key. If it does not, enter the key again. To move a single-PC retail licence to a new computer, remove it from the old one with slmgr /upk, install Windows on the new machine, enter the key, and use telephone activation if the online attempt is refused. OEM licences that came with a PC cannot be moved; the keys we sell as retail can.

Local account on Windows 11 Home and Pro

Windows 11 setup pushes a Microsoft account. On Pro, choose “Sign-in options” on the account screen and then “Domain join instead” to create a local account. On Home the option is not offered; the practical workaround is to disconnect the network before the account screen, which is no longer reliable on recent builds, or to create the Microsoft account and switch to a local account afterwards from Settings, Accounts, Your info. Activation is not affected either way: the key activates the installation regardless of the account type. If you later want the digital licence attached to a Microsoft account for easier reinstalls, sign in once from the same Settings page.
