Office 2024 Standard LTSC vs Professional Plus: Differences, Key Type, Installation and Which to Buy

Office 2024 Standard LTSC vs Professional Plus: Differences, Key Type, Installation and Which to Buy

Quick answer: Office LTSC 2024 Standard includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote, installs through the Office Deployment Tool with a volume key, and receives security-only updates until 9 October 2029. Office 2024 Professional Plus adds Access, installs from a direct installer and activates with a retail-style key. Both are lifetime licences. Choose Standard LTSC for managed PCs and anyone who wants the Deployment Tool’s control; choose Professional Plus if you need Access or prefer the simplest installation.

Office 2024 comes in two perpetual editions that confuse buyers because their names do not describe their differences. “LTSC” is a servicing term borrowed from Windows; “Professional Plus” is a traditional volume edition name. On GetDigiMarket they are our third and first best sellers respectively, and the question “which one?” arrives daily. This guide explains what LTSC means for Office, lists the differences precisely, shows how each installs, and gives a recommendation by use case.

What “LTSC” means for Office

Office LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) is Microsoft’s name for the perpetual, volume-licensed release of Office intended for devices that should not receive feature changes: regulated workstations, shared PCs, machines that run one process for years. It is the same code as the retail Office 2024 release, frozen at the September 2024 feature set, with security and stability updates for five years. Office LTSC 2024 comes in Standard and Professional Plus editions; the Professional Plus licences sold at retail-style prices, including ours, are in practice the same build as LTSC Professional Plus, which is why the two products behave almost identically after installation.

After installation, the two are indistinguishable except for the presence of Access and the licence name shown in File, Account. Both receive updates through Click-to-Run, both lack Copilot, both open the same files.

Installing Office LTSC 2024 Standard

The Standard LTSC key is a volume key, so installation uses Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool rather than a one-click installer. The delivery email includes the tool link and a ready-made configuration; the steps are:

  1. Download the Office Deployment Tool from Microsoft and extract it to a folder such as C:ODT.
  2. Save the supplied configuration.xml into the same folder. It names the product (ProPlus2024Volume or Standard2024Volume), the 64-bit edition, the language and the PerpetualVL2024 channel.
  3. Open Command Prompt in C:ODT and run setup.exe /configure configuration.xml. Office downloads from Microsoft’s servers and installs; allow ten to twenty minutes.
  4. Open Word, File, Account, Change Product Key, enter the key, Activate. If the button is hidden, open Command Prompt as administrator in C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice16 and run cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:YOUR-KEY followed by cscript ospp.vbs /act.

The tool also allows a one-time download with setup.exe /download configuration.xml for installing several machines from a local copy, and control over which apps to include through ExcludeApp elements, which is the main reason administrators prefer this route. Our Office installation guide and the standalone apps guide show the configuration format.

Installing Office 2024 Professional Plus

Run the installer from the link in your delivery email, open Word, File, Account, Change Product Key, enter the key. Done. The Deployment Tool can be used instead if you want the same control, but it is not required.

Updates and support

Both editions receive security updates and bug fixes through Click-to-Run until 9 October 2029, and no feature updates at any point. This is the behaviour buyers of a perpetual licence generally want: the interface and functions on day one are the ones on the last day. Neither edition ever shows Copilot, and neither nags about Microsoft 365.

Which to choose

Choose Standard LTSC when:

  • You do not need Access.
  • You manage several PCs and want the Deployment Tool’s silent installation and app selection.
  • You prefer volume-style activation that is independent of any installer download.
  • You are pairing it with Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC for a fully long-term-servicing desktop.

Choose Professional Plus when:

Price is not a deciding factor at one dollar of difference. If you are unsure, Professional Plus is the broader licence; Standard LTSC is the one administrators tend to ask for by name.

Activation problems specific to volume keys

A volume (MAK) key entered on an installation built from a retail installer, or the reverse, is refused with 0xC004F050 or “this product key is for a different product”. The fix is to install the matching build: the LTSC key needs the ODT installation with the volume product ID; the Professional Plus key needs the installer from its own delivery link. If the installation is correct and online activation still refuses with 0xC004C060, telephone activation completes it; our Office phone activation guide and free Confirmation ID service cover that. Our article on keys reported as used or blocked explains the remaining cases.

Office LTSC 2024 and Microsoft 365 side by side

Some organisations run Office LTSC on shared or regulated machines and Microsoft 365 Apps on staff laptops. The file formats are identical and documents move freely. One PC cannot run both builds at once, and Office LTSC on a machine signed into a Microsoft 365 account will still show the LTSC licence, not the subscription. Our Office 2024 vs Microsoft 365 comparison sets out when the subscription is the better fit.

A sample Office Deployment Tool configuration for Standard LTSC

The configuration file supplied with the licence looks like this, and you can edit the language or exclude apps before running it:

<Configuration><Add OfficeClientEdition="64" Channel="PerpetualVL2024"><Product ID="Standard2024Volume"><Language ID="en-us" /><ExcludeApp ID="OneNote" /></Product></Add><Display Level="Full" AcceptEULA="TRUE" /><Property Name="AUTOACTIVATE" Value="1" /></Configuration>

OfficeClientEdition sets 32- or 64-bit; Language ID accepts codes such as en-gb, de-de or fr-fr, and several Language elements can be listed; ExcludeApp removes apps you do not want (remove the line to keep OneNote); AUTOACTIVATE attempts activation at the end of installation when the key has been placed in a PIDKEY attribute on the Product element. Run setup.exe /configure configuration.xml from the folder containing both files. The same file with ProPlus2024Volume installs the Professional Plus build if you have that key.

Deploying to several PCs

Download once with setup.exe /download configuration.xml, which creates an Office folder beside the tool containing the installation files. Copy the whole folder to a USB drive or a network share, and run setup.exe /configure configuration.xml from it on each PC. Each installation still needs its own licence; the Standard LTSC key we sell covers one PC, so buy one per machine or ask us about quantities. For five or more machines this saves hours of downloading and guarantees every PC has the same build.

Which Windows to pair it with

Standard LTSC is the natural partner for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 or Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 on machines that should not change, and it runs equally well on Windows 11 Pro. Our guide to what Windows LTSC is explains the long-term servicing idea on the Windows side.

Reading the licence after installation

Open Word, File, Account. Under Product Information the Standard LTSC build reads “Office LTSC Standard 2024” and the other reads “Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024” or “Office Professional Plus 2024”. From the command line, cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus prints the licence name, the channel and LICENSE STATUS: ---LICENSED--- once activated. If the status shows a grace period or “NOTIFICATIONS”, the key has not been applied; enter it with /inpkey and activate with /act. Keep the delivery email with the key and the configuration file together; a reinstall years later is a matter of running the same two commands again.

Support, delivery and guarantee

Both licences are delivered by email within seconds with the official Microsoft links, both are covered by the 180-day money-back guarantee, and both are supported by the same team every day. If you are not sure which build you installed or which key you have, a screenshot of File, Account with your order number is enough for us to tell you; our guide on what to send support lists the details.

Frequently confused: Office LTSC and Windows LTSC

They share a name and a philosophy but are separate products with separate licences. Windows LTSC is an operating system edition; Office LTSC is an application suite edition. You can run Office LTSC on Windows 11 Pro, or Office 2024 Professional Plus on Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC, in any combination. Buying one does not include the other, and the support dates differ: Office LTSC 2024 to October 2029, Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 to October 2034. If your aim is a desktop that changes nothing for years, buy both LTSC editions; if your aim is simply a one-time Office purchase, either Office edition on any Windows does the job.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Office LTSC 2024 and Office 2024?

Office LTSC 2024 is the volume-licensed perpetual release; “Office 2024” at retail (Home, Home & Business) is the consumer perpetual release. Same code, same support date, different editions and licence types. Professional Plus 2024 sold as a single key is the LTSC Professional Plus build.

Does Office 2024 Standard LTSC include Outlook?

Yes. Standard includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote. It does not include Access.

Is the Standard LTSC key a lifetime licence?

Yes. One payment, no renewal. Security updates until 9 October 2029; the apps keep working afterwards.

Why does Standard LTSC need the Office Deployment Tool?

It is a volume-licensed build, and Microsoft distributes volume builds through the Deployment Tool rather than a consumer installer. The delivery email includes the tool link and a ready configuration file.

Can I install Office LTSC 2024 on Windows 10?

Yes. Windows 10 and 11 are supported, as are Windows Server 2019 and later for Remote Desktop deployments.

Does Office LTSC get new features?

No. Like Professional Plus 2024, it receives security and stability updates only. New features go to Microsoft 365.
